International Baccalaureate status awarded to four Chicago public schools

Four Chicago public schools recently received authorization to offer the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme. The approved schools include McPherson Elementary School, 4728 N. Wolcott Ave., partnering with Amundsen High School, 5110 N. Damen Ave.; and Douglass Middle School, 543 N. Waller Ave., partnering with Steinmetz High School, 3030 N. Mobile Ave.
To date, 10 Middle Years Programmes have been awarded to Chicago public elementary and high schools and another 13 IB Diploma Programmes are housed in high schools. The Middle Years Programme, for sixth- through tenth-grade students, has a specialized curriculum that focuses on English, world language, mathematics, humanities, sciences, arts, physical education and technology. Additionally, the curriculum will concentrate on areas of human interest including approaches to learning, community service, the environment and health and social education.
"We are absolutely thrilled that these six schools were given the distinction of being IB Middle Years Programmes," said Arne Duncan, CPS chief executive officer. "This adds four more viable options to the list of more than 300 schools of choice that our students can attend."
The International Baccalaureate Organization of Geneva, Switzerland awards this distinction to select schools around the world. There are only 200 Middle Years Programmes in the world—28 nationwide, and the CPS Middle Years Programme has nearly 2,200 students, the most in the U.S.
