Hear about a long-time Lincoln Park business

What does it take to keep industry in Chicago? Find out when Marilyn Labkon, president of General Iron Industries, Inc., speaks at noon Wednesday, April 30, in the Tower Club, 20 N. Wacker Dr., 39th floor. General Iron Industries, Inc., is a family owned and operated scrap metal recycling business located along the Chicago River between the gentrifying Clybourn Corridor and the hot real estate market along Elston Ave.
It was started in the early 1900s by Rose Rosenmutter to support herself and her seven children after her husband died. Later the business was operated by Rose's son, and it is now operated by her granddaughter, Marilyn Labkon. The company employs over 80 people and serves as the center for hundreds of suppliers who earn a living collecting and delivering recyclable goods. Each day over 750 truckloads arrive.
Find out how the company survived despite changing markets and the closing of its largest customers, the steel mills. The luncheon and program cost $35 for members of the Economic Development Council and $45 for nonmembers. Reservations are mandatory; call (773) 279-8787.
