Less than a week after the Lincoln Park Chamber of Commerce (LPCC) welcomed Chipotle, 610 W. Diversey Pkwy, to the neighborhood in a ribbon cutting ceremony, an employee was caught stealing a $1,505 bag of money. Antonio Garcia, of the 2800 block of S. Keeler Ave., has been charged.
The store manager opened the store at 7 a.m. on Monday, April 14, and found a false alarm notice written at 12:33 a.m. Two coin boxes and a deposit bag were found in the men's washroom that should have been in the safe. The safe was closed but unlocked. Approximately $1,400 was missing.
The manager did not touch anything and immediately called police. The evidence technicians and police surmised that the robber hid in the washroom until the store was closed and locked at 11:30 p.m. on Sunday night. The robber took the money from the safe and exited the side door which tripped the burglar alarm.
Police studied the surveillance tape with the manager, who identified the alleged perpetrator as Garcia. He was picked up for questioning and shown the video tape. According to police reports, within moments of viewing the tape Garcia said that he didn't have to see anymore and that he took the money.
The LPCC welcomed the new restaurant to the neighborhood not just because it is a new restaurant in the community but also because of its commitment to become part of the community. Chipotle has two community events coming up at the restaurant. The Burrito Fanatics are having a fundraiser for Chicago Cares on the afternoon of May 2. And, on May 3, the next evening Chipotle will help raise money for the Institute of Neurosurgery and Neuroresearch. Chipotle will be donating 100 percent of the money raised directly to the two organizations.
Chipotle is owned by the McDonald's Corporation of Oak Brook, IL.
