Families and kids of all ages are invited to get out after the long winter and go fly a kite at Montrose Harbor and Lake Shore Drive in Lincoln Park. On Saturday, May 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Kids and Kites Festival welcomes the spring with some high-flying fun.
Kids can showcase their artistic flair by building and decorating their own unique kites with free kite kits, or they can bring their own special kites from home.
This year kites will be spotted both in the sky and on the fridge when, for the first time, kids are invited to paint keepsake ceramic kite magnets, provided by Paint It Fun.
The festival encompasses a flurry of other activities including face painting, strolling entertainment, and storytelling with the return of the Kohl/McCormick StoryBus. Families can also watch kite flying professionals and instructors paint the sky with large, vibrant colored kites.
Blues artist Eomut Rason on harmonica will invoke the memory of Blues legend Little Walter as he performs the Muddy Waters' song "Blow, Wind, Blow."
Rason's performance is a part of Blues Season, which spans the month of May and will whet the appetite for the upcoming Blues Festival, May 29-June 1. The Kids and Kites Festival returns Sept. 20 to usher in the fall on the front lawn of the Museum of Science and Industry.
