Art loving members of Chicago's society set will pitch tents at Navy Pier on May 8 and May 9 for two very special charitable openings. Art Chicago and AntiquesChicago are separate shows, each with its own admission.
May 8, at the Pier's Festival Hall, will be the gala preview of the annual Art Chicago event at the pier. Called Vernissage, it marks the beginning of the important showing of modern art in town and will benefit the Museum of Contemporary Art at 230 E. Chicago Ave.
Vernissage (which literally means varnishing day, the day when all the finished art has a coat of varnish applied to it making it ready for sale to the general public) will be held in two parts. Sponsors and patrons will gather at 5 p.m. for a preview of the show along with the reception in honor of the MCA's patrons. Later in the evening a benefactors' pre-show opening will begin at 7 p.m. An estimated 40,000 people will attend the cutting edge contemporary art showing between May 9 and May 12.
The Art Chicago show will be produced by Thomas Blackman Associates. For Vernissage tickets and more information, call (312) 397-3868.
On May 9, a preview of the first International AntiquesChicago show will benefit Children's Memorial Hospital Foundation. The preview show offers access to the dealers and a chance to meet other collectors as well as the opportunity to purchase. The show and sale will be conducted in Navy Pier's Grand Ballroom between May 10 and 13. Leslie Hindman and Sandra Hindman (no kin) will be co-producing the show. For information on purchasing tickets, call (773) 975-8664.
