Lincoln Park High School is one of 12 high schools nation-wide to be featured on the Web site of the National Association of Secondary School Principals at www.nassp.org as an example of successful high schools that are showing high achievement data, especially when these schools serve high poverty students and under-represented minorities.
With support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the NASSP set out to identify high schools with student bodies of at least 50 percent minority and/or 50 percent qualified for free or reduced lunch, graduation rates of at least 90 percent, and at least 90 percent of their graduates attending college. Nominations were received from across the country and eventually 12 schools were selected that met these criteria. Research teams visited all 12 schools to meet with different stakeholder groups during their two-day visits. The research teams included NASSP staff members and representatives of the Education Alliance at Brown University.
The Web site gives information on each of the schools including demographic data and information about programs that make it possible for students to succeed. The enrollment at Lincoln Park of nearly 2000 students (36 percent African American; 31 percent white; 19 percent Hispanic; and 15 percent Asian) is diverse socio-economically with 35 percent living in the attendance area and 65 percent applying for admission from communities through the city. Fifty-one percent of the students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The graduation rate is 90 percent, and 90 percent of all graduates continue their education in two-year or four-year colleges.
