An aggravated battery with a handgun occurred on Tuesday, May 27, at 2:07 a.m. in the 4600 block of N. Clifton Ave. Courtney Steele, 21, of the 4400 block of N. Magnolia Ave., was arrested and charged with the offense.
Police on routine patrol were flagged down by the victim, 21, who was in the company of a 19-year-old female. They said they were walking on Broadway when two offenders, one of whom was called "Neck Bone," approached them. The first offender pulled a blue steel handgun and shot at the victims. The victims ran in opposite directions and eluded the offenders who shot a few more times.
The male victim then got into the responding officers' patrol car which drove near the location where the incident occurred, where they saw a 1986 maroon Chevrolet Caprice was pulling from a parking slot. The police followed the vehicle to Magnolia Ave., where the car pulled into an alley in the 4400 block. The occupants fled on foot and evaded capture.
Police checked the vehicle's registration and found the owner lived in the same block. A man answered the door and said he had a son who fit the description. Steele was found in the bedroom where he was taken into custody.
The female victim was taken to Weiss Memorial Hospital for treatment, having sustained a wound to her right "pinky" toe. A bullet casing was found at the scene of the shooting. According to police reports, the offenders are believed to be members of a street gang.
