Wanted: Blood donors...even the furry four-legged kind

Hyatt Regency Chicago will join over 100 Hyatt Hotels & Resorts in the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean in hosting their fifth annual blood drive, Hyatt's Drive for Life, on Tuesday, July 1, from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Riverside Ballroom.
This year, in a unique twist, Hyatt Regency Chicago will team up with the American Red Cross and the Animal Emergency Treatment Center of Grayslake, IL, to conduct a blood drive for humans and their pets, providing an important service to the community. As blood is needed most urgently right before the Independence Day holiday, Hyatt Regency Chicago's blood drive and pet blood drive, called Friends for Life, will greatly contribute to the anticipated shortage.
"Most people know about the need for blood donations for human recipients, but few people know that our four legged friends in crisis need blood donations, too," said Kristi Sandman, D.V.M. at the Animal Emergency Treatment Center in Grayslake. Blood for dogs must be provided by other dogs. The clinic's yearly supply need is estimated at over 1,000 pints, so the more donations received the larger the on-call registry becomes.
Dog blood donors must be 1-8 years of age, weigh at least 50 pounds, and be in general good health. The Animal Emergency and Treatment Center of Grayslake will offer each pet a mini physical and screening at the blood drive; no pet blood will actually be drawn that day. Information on dog blood donors will be available to all interested. Every pet will receive a special treat and gift for participating in the drive. Appointments are required. Please call the Animal Emergency & Treatment Center at (847) 548-5300 or email at ginafalish@aetcenter.office.com.
Human blood donors must be over 18 years of age, weigh at least 110 lb., and be in general good health. The American Red Cross will also administer a mini physical and screen for a blood donation. Cholesterol non-fasting screening will also be offered at no charge. All participating donors will receive four Chicago White Sox tickets to the Aug. 5 Kansas City Royals game.
Hyatt Regency Chicago will provide complimentary parking (two hours) for all four legged donors and their owners.
Individuals do not have to bring a pet to donate at the blood drive. Greyhounds Only, Inc. will have Greyhounds available for adoption, and the Anti-Cruelty Society will also offer adoption opportunities. The Hyatt Regency Chicago is located at 151 East Wacker Dr. For more information, call (312) 616-6894.
