Free opera 'Candide' at CCC
The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs presents its annual summer opera, the whirlwind satire "Candide," in the stunning Preston Bradley Hall at the Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington St., on July 24, 25, 27, and 29. Tickets to "Candide" are free and must be obtained in advance in the Visitor Information Center at the Chicago Cultural Center (limit four tickets per person). "Candide" is part of Play On Chicago, which celebrates Chicago's musical heritage through Sept. 21.
Two of the stars of "Candide," Colm Fitzmaurice and Eric McKeever, will present a Vocal Journeys recital in Preston Bradley Hall at the Chicago Cultural Center on July 20 at 7 p.m. Vocal Journeys is a monthly series sponsored by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs highlighting vocalists from the classical tradition.
On closing night, Tuesday, July 29, composer and performer Philip Seward will lead a "Candide" panel discussion in the Randolph Café of the Cultural Center from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Seward is best known for his seasonal favorite, "Hans Brinker," for which he composed the score with lyricist John Sparks. He is currently an Artist-in-Residence at Columbia College of Chicago.
