An art exhibition by a husband and wife, "A Journey: Two Views," displays photographs by Arthur Hand and collages by Janette Maley, and will be on display at the International Museum of Surgical Science from Aug. 8 to Oct. 24. A reception for the artists will take place on Friday, Aug. 8, from 5 to 7 p.m.
Each of Janette Maley's collages express what it felt like to her during different aspects of her breast cancer treatment. The artist states, "The inspiration for these images comes out of my need to truly acknowledge what my life, my fight for life, has been." Maley goes on to say, "Making these images has been part of my healing, my solace, and my acceptance. They have helped me along my journey into a life richer, more mindful of what I have, and how I want to live." Maley is an art instructor at Kishwaukee College in Malta, IL, and has exhibited her work throughout the Midwest.
Arthur Hand is a photographer who worked with landscape until three years ago when his wife, Janette, was diagnosed with cancer. Initially, he was to record a memory of what her body was before surgery. The photographs continued, however, "through her chemo, radiation, surgery, and the new life she is making after her treatment was completed." The artist states, "Through these images of my wife, I hope to share her journey and the journey of countless women throughout the world." Hand is in the Head of Photography at McHenry County College in Crystal Lake, IL, and has worked in the collection of the Museum of Contemporary Photography.
This event is the latest in the Museum's Anatomy in the Gallery series, which highlights artists who work in medically related themes. The series, sponsored in part by the Illinois Arts Council, advances the Museum's mission to present contemporary art within the context of the Museum's exceptional collection of paintings, sculpture and artifacts.
An opening reception, free to the public, will be held Friday, Aug. 8, from 5 to 7 p.m. The Museum is located at 1524 N. Lake Shore Dr., one-half block south of North Avenue. Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (open Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from May to September). Admission fees are $6 for adults and $3 for students and seniors. Tuesdays are free. Call (312) 642-6502 for more information.
