The mortar system is the most crucial element in the successful performance of all masonry. The basic concepts of mortar performance are important for all preservationists to understand. Cement and lime-based mortars have radically different characteristics, which impact the longevity of historic masonry. Case studies will illustrate the consequences of using both types of mortars.
The Preservation Snapshots series provides a monthly review of preservation issues with experts presenting talks on a specific subject. Question and answer sessions will follow each talk. The series takes place at the Chicago Cultural Center, 77 E.
