The North Pond Conservation Council (NPCC), a council of the Lincoln Park Conservancy, is hosting Walk with the Experts: An Intro to the North Pond Nature Sanctuary. This free walk will take place on Saturday, Sept. 6, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., and is open only to the first 45 participants to register. To register, call (773) 913-5703. Participants are urged to bring binoculars if they have them; otherwise, some loaners will be available.
Three experts will lead the tour, which will cover the history, wildlife and plant life of the North Pond Nature Sanctuary in Lincoln Park. Susan Fargo, chair of the NPCC, will give an overview of the pond's history dating back to 1888 and the pond's 1999 ecological restoration. Elizabeth Plonka, the Sanctuary's site steward, will discuss the area's native plants, their benefits to the ecosystem, and ways to identify some of the area's many wildflowers. Geoff Williamson, past president of the Chicago Ornithological Society, will introduce participants to birding and discuss the pond's wildlife.
The North Pond Nature Sanctuary is a ten-acre water body that lies between Fullerton and Diversey avenues and Stockton and Cannon drives on Chicago's lakefront. On any given day, birders, nature lovers and artists are inspired by the pond's colorful wildflowers and rewarded with glimpses of frogs, turtles, butterflies, and small mammals. Over 160 species of birds have been identified at the North Pond Nature Sanctuary.
