Go apple-picking in Lincoln Square

On Saturday, Sept. 13, Lincoln Square will hold its annual Applefest in Giddings Plaza in the 4700 block of N. Lincoln Ave., near Lawrence and Western avenues, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Apple growers will sell apples by the bushel, cider by the gallon, and other farm-fresh fruits, flowers and vegetables of the season. There will also be a number of arts and crafts vendors.
At 2 p.m. enjoy Ronald McDonald's Magic Show, sponsored by McDonald's Restaurant at 4844 N. Lincoln Ave. At noon the Country Affair will play country and Western music. Home baked apple treats will be judged at Cafe Selmarie (see below for entering the contest). An apple pie eating contest will be held at 1:40 p.m.
In addition, there will be face painting and games for children by the Queen of Angels and St. Matthias Girl Scouts, along with free balloons. Poetry readings will feature members of Maggie Rubin & C. J. Laity. "Miss Apple" will make the rounds. The Chicago Brauhaus will offer food for sale. There is no admission charge. Join the Bake Off:
The winner will receive a night on the town for two (dinner and show tickets) as well as the admiration and envy of all their friends and neighbors. The winning recipe will be published with a photo of the chef in this newspaper on Sept. 17.
All entrants must use apples in some form in their recipes and present their home baked goods by noon on Saturday, Sept. 13, to Cafe Selmarie, 4729 N. Lincoln Ave. The pastry chef at Cafe Selmarie will judge the entries and the winner will be announced at approximately 2 p.m. during the festival.
There are no limits to the number of entries per household. Contestants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. There are no guarantees that you'll get your pie plates back!
