VGT presents lush, romantic play
Dale Rivera plays the lector, Juan Julian, who catches the eye of Conchita, played by Charin Alvarez, in Victory Gardens Theater's season opener, Nilo Cruz' "Anna in the Tropics." Winner of the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, "Anna in the Tropics" is a lush, romantic play about Cuban-American cigar factory workers in 1929 in Ybor City, FL, whose routine is disrupted forever with the arrival of the handsome new "lector," whose job is to read literature to the workers as they roll cigars. The all-Chicago Latino cast also features Sandra Delgado as Marela, Eddie Torres as Palomo, Sandra Marquez as Ofelia, Gustavo Mellado as Santiago, and Ricardo Gutierrez as Cheche.
Nilo Cruz is the first Hispanic playwright to win the Pulitzer Prize. Henry Godinez, Artistic Associate at the Goodman Theatre, directs this Midwest premiere.
