Political activist John Stauber speaks on propaganda at DePaul Feb. 5

Author and lecturer John Stauber, whose 1997 book on Mad Cow Disease foreshadowed recent events, will give a speech at DePaul University titled "Weapons of Mass Deception: PR, Propaganda and Democracy" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, in the Schmitt Academic Center, 2320 N. Kenmore Ave., Room 154. Stauber, executive director of the Center for Media & Democracy, based in Madison, WI, is co-author, with Sheldon Rampant, of four critically acclaimed books: "Weapons of Mass Deception: The Uses of Propaganda in Bush's War on Iraq" (2003), "Trust Us, We're Experts: How Industry Manipulates Science and Gambles with Your Future" (2001), "Mad Cow U.S.A.: Could the Nightmare Happen Here?" (1997), and "Toxic Sludge is Good for You: Lies, Damn Lies and the Public Relations Industry" (1995).
Before founding the center, which is dedicated to investigative reporting on the public relations industry, Stauber worked for five years for the Foundation for Economic Trends, a Washington, DC-based nonprofit organization researching health and economic impacts of recombinant bovine growth hormone. Stauber's lecture, sponsored by DePaul's Public Relations and Advertising Graduate Program, is free and open to the public.
