Beginning this week, a streetscape improvement project on Clark Street between Belden Avenue and St. James Place will get underway. "Clark Street will receive numerous infrastructure upgrades and decorative elements," said Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) Commissioner Miguel d'Escoto. "The enhancements are part of a comprehensive streetscaping project, designed by CDOT in close cooperation with community representatives and the alderman, to increase the safety and improve the overall appearance of this historic Chicago neighborhood."
The project, which is the first of three planned along Clark Street, will expand the existing sidewalks from 8 feet to 11 feet. The wider sidewalks will dramatically affect the character of the neighborhood and allow for the installation of 50 new trees with tree grates, and decorative light poles with hanging baskets. The project will also include street resurfacing, new curbs and gutters, and planters with irrigation and decorative fencing at Belden and Arlington.
The Streetscape Program improves neighborhood commercial districts with beautification and infrastructure improvements. Streetscapes create a more attractive area for neighborhood businesses to locate and provide a pleasant environment for shoppers.
During construction, Clark Street will remain open to motorists and pedestrians. In order to keep the street open to traffic, parking will not be allowed on Clark Street between Belden Avenue and St. James Place for the duration of the project. In addition, there will be periodic parking restrictions on some side streets.
Access to businesses and residences will be maintained throughout construction. In addition, businesses will have access to a loading zone.
The project is scheduled for completion this summer.
