Snow removal liability

Many property and business owners are mistakenly under the impression that they should not shovel their sidewalks because they then will be liable if anyone slips and is injured. They are wrong. City ordinance not only requires the shoveling of a 5' wide path clear of snow, it also protects the person who shovels.
Section 10-8-190 Liability for Civil Damages reads:
Any person who removes snow or ice from the public sidewalk or street, shall not, as a result of his acts or omissions in such removal, be liable for civil damages. This section does not apply to acts or omissions amounting to willful or wanton misconduct in such snow or ice removal.
