Young Chicago Lakefront (YCL), the 44th Ward Democratic Organization’s group for young professionals, is launching a breakfast series to offer young adults the opportunity to learn more about politics and meet local elected officials. North Side Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky will be featured in the inaugural event on Saturday, Feb. 21.
The YCL Breakfast Series will be held quarterly to offer a roundtable dialogue with prominent elected leaders and candidates for elected office. Schakowsky will offer insight about her career path as an elected official in Illinois and in the United States House of Representatives.
“Jan Schakowsky has been a grassroots organizer and progressive leader for Chicago and all of Illinois,” said Ald. Tom Tunney (44th). “Young adults will be able to learn a lot from her experiences running for office and as an elected leader.”
The Feb. 21 YCL Breakfast Series will be held at 11 a.m. at Ann Sather’s Restaurant at 929 W. Belmont Ave. The event is free for YCL members and $5 for young people interested in meeting Congresswoman Schakowsky or learning more about YCL (the entrance fee serves as membership fee). Space is limited; RSVP to YoungChicago@aol.com.
In addition to the launch of the Breakfast Series, members have been active in the election of Alderman Tom Tunney and other local leaders. YCL has also hosted social events every two months and performed numerous community outreach projects including cooking dinner at a local homeless shelter, volunteering at the Chicago Food Depository and cleaning neighborhood parks.
The 44th Ward is well known for the young constituency in its Lakeview and Wrigleyville communities. Local elected leaders Democratic Committeeman Bernie Hansen, Cook County Commissioner Mike Quigley, state Rep. Sara Feigenholtz, state Rep. John Fritchey and state Sen. John Cullerton decided to form Young Chicago Lakefront in December 2001 to offer social, political and community service opportunities to young residents of Chicago’s north lakefront. Members of YCL do not need to live in the 44th Ward or Chicago’s north lakefront and age is not restricted, although the typical age of members ranges from 20 to 35.
