Students partner with retailers to turn store windows into exhibition spaces

"Artwindows," a partnership between one of the nation's top-ranked art schools and retailers, brings together School of the Art Institute of Chicago students and some of the most prestigious stores on Michigan Avenue and the surrounding shopping district. This pairing of the arts and business, sponsored by the School's Department of Exhibition and Events, begins today and continues through Thursday, April 15. "Artwindows" provides retailers with the opportunity to display original works of art in their windows while presenting the School's graduate and undergraduates with highly visible venues for showing their cutting-edge work.
Stores participating in "Artwindows" include agnes b.; G'bani; Hermes; Max Mara; Nicole Miller; Nordstrom; Oilily; Marina Rinaldi; Fratelli Rossetti; Mark Shale; Paul Stuart; and Tiffany & Co.
To assist the general public with self-guided art walks, maps with the location of each "Artwindow" are available at participating stores and at the concierge desks of local hotels. For more information call (312) 443-3703.
At Paul Stuart, Erin Moore's images of primarily black and white are derived from rhythms and patterns in musical scores and written text.
Ryan Swanson's found object sculptures at Tiffany & Co. elicit surprise when the objects used by the artist are identified.
Also at Tiffany & Co., Julette Herwitt's miniature paintings of reflections display a jewel-like beauty deserving of a closer look.
The main floor's center aisle at Nordstrom provides a dramatic retail gallery setting for diverse works by 14 artists.
Marshall Svendsen's sculpture installation at G'bani investigates religious philosophy, mythology and imagery.
Deirdre McConnell's "floating" watercolors at Oilily bring refreshing reminders that spring is approaching.
Participating student artists are Nancy Christian, Alyssa Miserendino, Brian Loftus, Calli Cohn, Chelsea Knight, Claire Sherman, David Parker, Deborah Satter, Deirdre McConnell, Dong EunLee, Elizaveta Meksin, Erin Moore, Guan Rong, Jakub Augustyn, Joan Lee, Julette Herwitt, Kelly Stracburg, Marshall Svendsen, Megan Euker, Melissa Roberts, Michelle Maynard, Nikkole Huss, Rachael Dobos, Rachel Wakeman, Robyn Engel, Ryan Swanson, Seung Ho Sun, Shira Leon, Tara Smith, Teena McClelland, Wendee Goles, Yin-Wa Yau.
