Free support groups for the bereaved
Horizon Hospice, Chicago's first hospice service, was established in 1978 by four volunteers to provide compassionate comfort care to the dying. Horizon now serves about 600 terminally ill patients throughout the Chicago area annually. Visiting physicians, nurses, chaplains, social workers and volunteers deliver home-based end-of-life care focused on relieving the pain and respecting the dignity of each patient. Horizon's bereavement counselors provide support for patients' families, friends and caregivers for more than a year after the death of their loved one.
Support groups for the bereaved: Horizon is offering the following professionally facilitated support groups to bereaved adults in the community free-of-charge. "Continuing the Journey" is for adults grieving any loss and meets the first Thursday of every month, 6 to 7:30 p.m., as an on-going group.
"Horizon Social Group" is for adults grieving any loss and is a once-a-month social gathering for the bereaved. Outings may include dinner, theatre or the zoo. Call for more information.
