Ella Jenkins will perform in a free concert at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 20, in The Land of Nod store, 1630 N. Clybourn Ave., as part of the store's celebration of turning one year old. At noon there will be a drawing for the prize of an Ella Jenkins three-CD package with harmonica, courtesy of Smithsonian Folkways. The celebration continues at 3:30 p.m. with Musical Nod Chairs with a prize, followed by birthday cake at 4 p.m. and the drawing of raffle tickets—for prizes such as posters and gift certificates—at 4:30 p.m.
Leading up to Saturday's excitement, there will be balloons all week and the opportunity to enter the raffle. The Land of Nod will offer face painting from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, March 17 and 18, as well as Story Time with cookies at 4 p.m. Wednesday and Friday, March 17 and 19. All events are free.
Ella Jenkins, a native of Chicago, has created universally appealing songs that present simple melodies, interesting rhythms, and easy-to-understand lyrics. They are usually recorded with youngsters singing along. Since her first record, "Call and Response" (1957), she has released 30 albums and two videos on Smithsonian Folkways. The classic "You'll Sing a Song and I'll Sing a Song" is the best-selling record in the history of Folkways Records.
