Spring birdwalks for beginning birders

They're back again—Scarlet Tanagers, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Indigo Buntings and other colorful migrating birds who come through Chicago every spring. For an easy way to observe these beauties, Chicago Audubon Society offers two free Special Birdwalks for Beginning Birders, Saturday, April 24, and Saturday, May 15, at North Park Village Nature Center, 5801 N. Pulaski Rd., from 9 to 11 a.m.
The program opens with tips on identifying birds and how to use binoculars, with recommendations on field guides, Web sites, and local birding sites. Experienced Chicago Audubon guides will then help new birders spot and identify birds during a leisurely walk along the well-groomed paths of the Nature Center's meadows and woodlands.
These special birdwalks are a service of the Chicago Audubon Society's Early Birds Project, designed to provide support for adults and children starting out in birding. The Chicago chapter of the National Audubon Society is a leader in the conservation and restoration of natural ecosystems, focusing on birds and other wildlife for the benefit of humanity and the earth's biological diversity.
Special Birdwalks for Beginning Birders are open to all ages; youngsters under 16 should be accompanied by an adult. Birding field guides and binoculars will be available. Free parking is located directly in front of the Nature Center.
There is no fee, but pre-registration is required. To register, phone: (773) 539-6793, or e-mail chicago_audubon@juno.com. For more information regarding the Chicago Audubon Society, see chicagoaudubon.org.
