Reading sizzles with Hull House Association's Fiesta for Literacy

Heat up your evening and warm up your heart at the Jane Addams North Side Family Literacy Program's Fifth Annual Fiesta for Literacy on May 1. Featuring a night of live music, salsa dancing, and drawing and silent auction prizes, the benefit will fund the Hull House Association's community literacy program serving 205 children and their families in low-income Chicago communities. The event will take place from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Park West, located at 322 W. Armitage Ave.
Carpacho y su Super Combo, a 10-piece local band complete with a horn section and choreographed vocalists, will provide lively salsa, merengue and cha-cha dance music. For salsa-novices, Alejandro Aldape of Dance Connection will give a free lesson. And for those who would prefer just to watch, Fiesta attendees will bring the twirling skirts and swaying hips.
"The Fiesta for Literacy is a great party, but what makes it even better is that the event supports a wonderful program," said Susan Purdie, North Region Director, Family Support and Community Building Services, Jane Addams Hull House Association. "Through the family literacy program, children have fun learning, volunteers have fun working with children, and parents feel the support of the community."
Forty-three percent of people with the lowest literacy skills live in poverty. The Jane Addams Family Literacy Program motivates children and families to excel at reading and writing—vital skills for life success. The program benefits a diverse group of children. Staff and volunteers focus on home involvement, classroom instruction and individualized tutoring to advance each student's literacy skills.
"My son's tutor helps him understand his homework and strengthens his weak points, like spelling," said Sara Arango. "They have worked together for two years, and my son has gotten better in many school subjects. I've also taken English classes for two years through the literacy program. I feel more confident, thanks to the extra help from my tutors."
Tickets for the Fiesta for Literacy cost $45 in advance and $60 at the door. Admission includes hors d'oeuvres and two complimentary drink tickets. To purchase tickets online or for more information, visit hullhouse.org/fiesta or call (312) 906-8600, ext. 165.
