The midpoint between the seasonal extremes of summer and winter, spring is the ideal time to address some exterior maintenance issues before they grow from minor concerns to major problems.
Gap check: Winter storms—whether wind, rain, snow—can take a toll on your house. Take a walk around the outside of your house and look for gaps in the siding, between windows and walls, or at joints in the house that could let in unwelcome water, insects, or even small animals. Recaulk around windows and doors where necessary and be sure to have gaps repaired before they cause problems.
Rot check: Grab a pocketknife and use it to check exterior wood—trim, fences, decks, etc.—for telltale sponginess, whether wet or dry, of rotten wood. Look for the water source that is causing the problem and take care of it; then remove and replace the rotten wood so the rot doesn’t spread throughout your house.
Exterior paint: Paint, especially outside, does far more than simply provide a decorative touch. Paint acts as a protective barrier shielding wood and metal from the damaging effects of moisture, sunlight and corrosive agents. Check trim and metal fixtures for crackling, peeling, or bubbling paint and take the time to remove it and repaint it for an attractive, functional finish.
Decks: Annual cleaning and resealing of wood decks and fences is recommended to ensure a long life for your wood; this is a great time to do it!
