TimeLine Theatre Company concludes its season with the Chicago premiere of "It's All True," by Canadian playwright Jason Sherman. Directed by Louis Contey, "It's All True" opens on May 1 with performances through June 6, at Timeline's home at 615 W. Wellington Ave. Previews are Wednesday, April 28, through Friday, April 30, at 8 p.m.
"It's All True" is a fast-paced, witty comedy that brings to life a defining moment in the history of American theatre. Art and politics collide when the government's Works Progress Administration shuts down Marc Blitzstein's new pro-union musical, "The Cradle Will Rock," in 1937. With the theatre padlocked and the actors barred from appearing on stage, director Orson Welles and producer John Houseman lead the actors and audience on a defiant march to perform in the aisles of another theatre.
As a companion piece to "It's All True," TimeLine Theatre Company will present three concert readings of "The Cradle Will Rock," by Marc Blitzstein, directed by Nick Bowling. The performances are on Sundays, May 16, 23 and 30, at 6:30 p.m. Combining elements of opera, Broadway musical and social drama, "The Cradle Will Rock" uses humor, parody and satire to expose the desperation and discontent of its time. As union-organizers gain strength, steel magnate Mr. Mister bribes and coerces businessmen, clergy and the local press to support the steel industry and silence the voice of exploited workers.
"It's All True" will have regular performances Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. through Sunday, June 6. Single tickets for "It's All True" are $22; student and preview tickets are $10. FlexPass subscriptions (three admissions to use in any combination at any performance throughout the season) are available for Timeline's 2004-2005 season. Group rates are also available.
