'That's Weird, Grandma' now has new scenes, songs
Barrel of Monkeys (BOM) presents "That's Weird, Grandma," new installments of the critically acclaimed assortment of scenes and songs adapted by the ensemble from Chicago public school students. This new selection of student-created and adult-produced theatrical sketches continues the successful run begun in April 2001, and includes titles such as "Dear Jacob, This is your desk, here are things I do not like about my life," "Que Sean Mejores los Almuerzos en la Escuela" (about how food should be better in the cafeteria) and "George Bush, Bill Clinton and a Monkey."
Barrel of Monkeys will perform at the Chicago Improv Festival on Sunday, May 2, 1 p.m., at the Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington St., with free admission. For more information on this performance, contact CIF at (773) 935-9810 or visit cif.com.
After teaching creative writing in the CPS system, BOM's ensemble of actors, comedians, musicians and playwrights selects and adapts some of the thousands of stories generated by children for stage presentation. The result has been an audience favorite—a show that is safe for all ages (6+ recommended), yet very much appreciated by an adult audience. "That's Weird, Grandma" (named after one of the original sketches) changes each week according to audience votes (switching two or three sketches in and out each performance), and each show runs about one hour.
The fun takes place at The Neo-Futurarium, 5153 N. Ashland Ave., continuing Mondays at 8 p.m. for an open run. Please note there is no "That's Weird, Grandma" show on Monday, May 10. There is a special Memorial Day show on Monday, May 31 - along with the performance, all audience members will receive free Memorial Day snacks, free American flag tattoos and a free retelling of the true meaning of Memorial Day.
For tickets, call (312) 409-1954; $8 single tickets; group rates available for ten or more.
