Saint Gregory the Great Church will host the second annual Cookin' in the Courtyard on Saturday, Sept. 18, from 4 to 11 p.m.
Held in the shadows of the magnificent, 80-year-old Gothic Saint Gregory the Great church and school, Cookin' in the Courtyard will benefit the landmark Andersonville parish and offers much more than the usual block party fun and fare. Aside from the food served by some of North Clark Street's most famous eateries, there will be a balloonist, a magician and a face painter as well as a play and puppet show put on by the Raven Theater and Quest Ensemble.
The night will really begin to sizzle as two of Chicago's finest jazz musicians take the stage at 8 p.m. John Moulder is a well-known jazz guitarist who has headlined at some of the city's finest clubs and has performed around the world with a veritable who's who of contemporary jazz. He has appeared with the likes of Kurt Elling, Lyle Mays, Paul Wertico, Eddie Harris and Bob Mintzer in venues such as the Beijing Music Festival, Leverkusen Music Festival and the Chicago Jazz Festival.
Appearing with Moulder will be Jackie Allen, an accomplished jazz vocalist who has lit up the scene as a performer, recording artist and educator. Allen's albums include "Never Let Me Go," "Santa Baby," "Which?" and "Women Who Swing Chicago." This is a rare opportunity to hear and engage two fine Chicago musicians in an informal setting.
Cookin' in the Courtyard will be held on Bryn Mawr Ave. one block west of Ashland Ave., between The British School and the Saint Gregory High School. Admission is $8 in advance, $10 at the door, $5 for students and seniors, and free for children under 12 accompanied by an adult.
