RCC Holiday Lighting Contest
The Ravenswood Community Council announces its Lighting of Ravenswood 2004. This year's contest is open to any outdoor lighting display (or any display viewable from the outside front of a building or storefront) within the RCC boundaries (Addison St. to Bryn Mawr Ave. and the Chicago River to Clark St.). Homes, churches, businesses, apartment buildings, schools and institutions are all welcome to enter. The judging will begin Dec. 13 and go through Dec. 18. Winners will be announced Sunday, Dec. 19. Contest entry forms and information are available from RCC by calling (773) 583-1600 during regular business hours. Entry fee is $15.

Illegitimate Arts Festival
The 19th semi-annual Illegitimate Arts Festival: "As goes the conversation, so goes reality" will be presented by a collection of students participating in the Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM) Chicago Arts Program. This one night only event, held Friday, Dec. 10, includes original multi media sculptures, prints, short form theater, paintings, performance art, singing, pre-recorded radio shows, and photography.
The 19th Semi-Annual Illegitimate Arts Festival takes place at 3340 N. Clark St., #300, third floor. Admission is free and open to the public, refreshments will be served and no reservations are required. Fifth Province Lounge
You’ll find the very best in live Irish music every Friday and Saturday night at the Fifth Province at the Irish American Heritage Center. All shows begin after 9 p.m. There’s no cover charge and plenty of free parking.

Catholics Returning Home
Queen of Angels Parish will conduct an ongoing series called Catholics Returning Home on six consecutive Wednesdays from 7:30 to 9 p.m. The Christmas/ Winter series will begin on Jan. 5, in the Voss Center at 4412 N. Western Ave. These sessions are for non-practicing Catholics who are seeking answers to questions about returning to the Church. There will be informal sharing and an update of the Catholic faith. Previous members have been away from the church for a short period of time and for as long as 35 years. German Christmas Mass
Everyone is invited to attend the festive German Christmas Mass on Saturday, Dec. 25, at 9:15 a.m. at St. Alphonsus Church, 1429 W. Wellington Ave. (corner of Lincoln and Southport avenues). It will be concelebrated by Fr. James Hurlbert, Pastor of St. Alphonsus Church, and Fr. Theo Twarog. Red, red, red
The Jean Albano Gallery presents Painting the Town Red, a group exhibition. The show opens on Friday, Dec. 10, and will continue through Saturday, Feb. 5. The gallery will host an opening reception on Friday, Dec. 10, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 215 W. Superior St.
The artists have expressed the vitality and passion of life by incorporating both metaphoric references and literal renditions of red. Painting the Town Red will include the artwork of Karl Wirsum, Richard Loving, Valerie Beller, John Himmelfarb, Gladys Nilsson, Jim Waid, Robert Walker, and Mindy Weisel, among others.
Gallery hours are Monday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; or by appointment.

Bridging Cultures: Building Peace
The Midwest premiere of a work by a contemporary Iranian composer is among the highlights of the program planned by Artistic Director Stephen Burns for Fulcrum Point’s Seventh Annual Concert for Peace. Bridging Cultures: Building Peace will be performed Thursday, Dec. 16, at 7:30 p.m. at the Fourth Presbyterian Church on Michigan Ave. between Delaware Pl. and Chestnut Ave.
Bringing Cultures: Building Peace will be performed by 10 members of Fulcrum Point’s classically trained ensemble, under the direction of Burns. Special guests include the Chicago Chamber Choir directed by Timm Adams; Rabbi Philip Bentley of Congregation Kol-Ami; Yaser Tabbara, executive director of the Council on American –Islamic Relations; and renowned Palestinian composer, ‘ud player and teacher Issa Boulos, who is the director of the University of Chicago Middle East Music Ensemble.
Interspersed with the musical performances, Rabbi Bentley and Mr. Tabbara will offer their reflections on intercultural understanding as the foundation of peace. In addition, verses from medieval Persian poet Molana Jalal-e-Din Mohammed Molavi Rumi will be read aloud.

CATS seeks proposals
The Chicago Area Transportation Study (CATS) is calling for FY 2006 Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement (CMAQ) Program project proposals.
The Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) Improvement Program is a federally-funded program of surface transportation improvements designed to reduce congestion and related air pollution.
Projects eligible for funding under the CMAQ program include transit service improvements, commuter park and ride lots, traffic flow improvements, signal interconnects and bicycle/pedestrian projects that eliminate or reduce automobile trips.
As the metropolitan planning organization (MPO) for the northeastern Illinois region, CATS evaluates CMAQ project proposals and approves projects for funding.
