Lothar Speer created a stunning hand-painted ostrich egg that will be auctioned at the fourth annual benefit for HOPE on Oct. 21, to help the Women's Program of the HIV Center at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The benefit takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, at Ann Nathan Gallery, 212 W. Superior St., featuring cocktails and a silent auction of dozens of unique hand-painted ostrich eggs, each donated by a prominent local artist. Tickets are $75. Space is limited. For information and reservations, call (312) 926-7133. The mission of HOPE, since 1999, has been to provide Help, Optimism, the will to Persevere, and Encouragement to HIV positive women and their newborns.
Lothar Speer spent three weeks using a faux marble finish, faux gold decorations, and paintings of five cherubs—one Chinese, one Mexican, one white, and two black—to transform the ostrich egg into a creation reminiscent of Fabergé's work for the Russian czars. "I would love to have high quality art address social concerns and contribute to the betterment of society," he said. This is the second year in which he has donated his art to HOPE's benefit. Please see next week's issue of Inside for an in-depth look at Lincoln Square artist Lothar Speer, whose work is in collections worldwide. Meet him and the other ostrich egg artists at the HOPE benefit next week.
