More than 200 local people gathered at Rhapsody Restaurant in September to support the young women of Josephinum Academy. The event, themed Goûter (French for "to taste"), pays homage to Josephinum Academy's affiliation with the 21-member Network of Sacred Heart Schools and provides scholarships for Josephinum students.
The evening was co-chaired by current Josephinum health teacher Gayle Major-McGowean of the South Loop and former Josephinum English teacher Constance O'Brien Penman, formerly of Lincoln Park. Guests bid on more than 70 silent auction items as they snacked on Rhapsody's hors d'oeuvres and listened to live music provided by Twisted Jazz.
A cash raffle was also part of the evening event and fundraiser. Martha Roughan, RSCJ, Josephinum Academy Principal, picked three winning tickets from nearly 400 raffle tickets purchased at $50 each. The $5,000 and $1,000 prize winners were then announced. Both raffle winners donated the entirety of their winnings back to Josephinum Academy.
Josephinum Academy, established in 1890 by the Sisters of Christian Charity, is a multicultural Catholic college prep school, serving nearly 200 young women in grades six through twelve. Eighty-six percent of students who attend Josephinum qualify for reduced lunches. On average, 100 percent of seniors graduate and 95 percent are accepted into local or national colleges or universities.
