The original medieval manuscript of the famous texts and melodies of "Carmina Burana" will be performed by Ars Musica Chicago under the direction of Andrew Schultze at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 1010 W. Webster St., at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17. From the 12th and 13th centuries, this was put together by, one could say, the "beatniks" of the Middle Ages, the intellectual "dropouts" of society who were critical of the main stream. From the Austrian-German part of the world, some of these texts are in Latin, some in Medieval German, featuring religious, drinking and love songs. Rarely performed, this bawdy, colorful music transports the audience back to medieval times.
The cost is $15, or $12 for students or seniors. A series of all four concerts this season by Ars Musica is priced at $40. Order tickets by calling (312) 409-7874, or visiting ArsMusicaChicago.org.
