A New Make-A-Wish Leader

The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Illinois announces the appointment of Peter Anthony of Lake View to the organization’s Board of Directors.
Mr. Anthony is president and CEO of UGN, Inc., responsible for providing overall strategic planning for UGN’s acoustic, interior trim and thermal management business for the Japanese transplant automotive industry in North America. Mr. Anthony’s corporate experiences equip him to serve the Foundation as it strives to bring more wishes to children with life threatening medical conditions. 'Sophie’s Masterpiece – A Spider’s Tale’
For the whole family, Lifeline Theatre KidSeries presents a musical adaptation of “Sophie’s Masterpiece – A Spider’s Tale,” based on the book by popular author Eileen Spinelli. Sophie is no ordinary spider. She’s an artist, but no one at Beekman’s Boarding House appreciates her talent—no one, that is, except the expectant mother who befriends Sophie. When her friends runs out of yarn to make a baby blanket, Sophie decides to spin a masterpiece. This poignant and heartwarming tale is realized primarily through music and dance.

Children’s Irish School
The first Irish School in the Chicago area will resume classes at the Irish American Heritage Center, 4626 N. Knox Ave., Jan. 22.
On Saturday mornings, from 9 a.m. to noon, children will have fun learning about Irish heritage, customs, languages, art and music through drama, story telling, crafts and games. Classes are geared for children ages 6-14 years old. The cost for the classes is $60. The winter session begins Jan. 22 and runs through Feb. 26. Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
Christian churches throughout the nation set aside one week, Jan. 18-25, to celebrate their unity through local ecumenical prayer and celebrations. This year’s theme is “All things are yours...you belong to Christ...and Christ, the unique foundation, belongs to God.” (1 Corinthians 3:1-23)
Five Lake View churches are planning to participate in this year’s annual event. Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church, 690 W. Belmont Ave., will be the host site. Other churches participating are St. Peter’s Episcopal, St. Luke’s Evangelical Lutheran, Holy Trinity Lutheran, and Lakeview Presbyterian Church. Clergy, musicians and parishioners from other area church communities are invited to attend.
The guest speaker for the evening will be Rev. John Dally, Professor of Homiletics and director of the Seabury Western Theological Seminary, on the campus of Northwestern University in Evanston.

Community Service Award

Lake View resident Anthony Aurthurs (right) is given his 2004 Community Service Award from Jim Kestleloot, president and executive director of the Chicago Lighthouse for People who are Blind or Visually Impaired, at the Chicago Lighthouse. Aurthurs, who works for Habilitative Systems, Inc., is awarded the “Against All Odds Award,” for his courageous efforts to overcome personal adversity while achieving professional success. CCM Family Concert
The Chicago Chamber Musicians (CCM) will present "And Furthermore, They Bite!", the annual Family Concert, Jan. 22 and 23, in cooperation with Chicago Shakespeare Theatre on Navy Pier where all concerts will be performed. Composer and conductor Robert Kapilow will host the 10th anniversary concert.
The program will include Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Flight of the Bumble Bee,” Saint-Saens’ “Carnival of the Animals,” and Kapilow’s “ And Furthermore, They Bite!”, written as a companion piece to "Carnival of the Animals.”
“And Furthermore, They Bite!” will be held twice on Saturday, Jan. 22, and twice on Sunday, Jan. 23, at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Tickets for children ages three and above are $12, adults $15. Happy Birthday, Mozart!
The Rembrandt Chamber Players present Happy Birthday, Mozart! on Tuesday, Jan. 24, at 7:30 p.m. at Walter Payton College Prep, 1034 N. Wells St. Celebrate his birthday with three of his most beloved pieces of chamber music: Quartet in C major for flute and strings, Quintet for piano and winds, and Quartet in E flat for piano and strings. After the concert, the audience and the musicians will join for coffee and dessert. Guest artists include Yuan-Qing Yu, violin, James Giles, piano, Dennis Michel, bassoon, and Jonathan Boen, horn. Woody Guthrie's Jewish songs
Visit the Spertus Museum, 618 S. Michigan Ave., for a special program called Holy Ground: New Jewish Songs from the Woody Guthrie Archives, on Sunday, Jan. 30, at 2 p.m. Buried in the Woody Guthrie Archives are scores of the songwriter’s that have never been heard by the public – including dozens of lyrics with Jewish themes ranging from Hanukkah to the Holocaust. Guthrie's Jewish lyrics can be traced to an unusual relationship he had with his mother-in-law, Aliza Greenblatt, a prominent Yiddish poet. The program costs $12/$10 for members. Family fun at Thresholds’ benefit
Thresholds, Illinois’ oldest and largest psychiatric recovery center, hosts “Young at Heart,” its 2005 winter benefit, at the Chicago Children’s Museum at Navy Pier on Saturday, Jan. 29, 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. This annual event is still one of the museum’s only benefits for guests of all ages: the young and old, both families and singles.
Guests will enjoy exclusive use of the museum and its interactive exhibits. Other activities include a host of raffle and silent auction items for kids and adults, interactive games, dancing to childhood favorites played by DeLeo’s Entertainment, and a magic show by Jeffrey the Great. A complimentary dinner buffet catered by Lou Malnati’s will be offered, along with free beer, wine and soft drinks.

Middle East Music Ensemble
The University of Chicago’s Middle East Music Ensemble presents their winter concert on Saturday, Jan. 15, at 8 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church at The Chicago Temple, 77 W. Post-holiday program
The festive sounds of the Chicago Chamber Orchestra will greet the New Year in the Annual Higgins Holiday Program at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, in Preston Bradley Hall of The Chicago Cultural Center, Michigan Ave. at Randolph St.
