On Wednesday night, Jan. 26, Mid-North Association held its annual membership meeting and election of officers at the John Barleycorn Memorial Saloon, at Lincoln Ave., Orchard St. and Belden Ave. Mid-North Association announced its annual charitable grants, and distributed checks totaling $14,000 to the following 12 organizations and schools located in or serving the Mid-North area.
The After School Center received $1,000 for ongoing programs. Childrens Memorial Hospital received $500 for Web design - L.P. Connect. The Chicago Historical Society received $500 for community programs.
The Contemporary Art Workshop received $1,500 for exhibitions. The Fairy Godmother Foundation received $1,000 for grant support. The Lincoln Park Community Research Initiative received $500 for the Oral History of Lincoln Park.
The Lincoln Elementary School received $1,000 for the Jr. Science Gardening Club. The Lincoln Park Community Shelter received $2,500 for ongoing programs. The Lincoln Park High School received $2,500 for the orchestra to purchase one bass and one violin.
The Lincoln Park Zoo received $1,000 for its Annual Fund. The New Leaf Theatre received $1,000 for its program "wish list." The St. Vincent DePaul Center received $1,000 for the Adopt-a-Family Fund.
The funding for these grants comes from Mid-North Association's annual Music Fest. This year, the Fest will be held on Saturday, June 18, and Sunday, June 19, in the 2000 block of Lincoln Park West and on the lawn of the Lincoln Park Cultural Center. There will be live music, food, beverages, exhibits, artwork and jewelry for sale, kids activities, and much more.
At the meeting, the following officers were elected for a one-year term: President, Jeannie Barkan; Vice-President, Jeff Bucaro; Recording Secretary, Susan Saunders; Corresponding Secretary, Jeff Goad; and Treasurer, Ed Mitchen.
The following board members were elected, also for a one-year term: Melanie Apel, David Chernoff, Lucien Lagrange, Todd Main, Nada Riley and Kevin Waco.
Mid-North President Jeannie Barkan spoke about Mid-North Association's "year in review" as well as plans for the coming year.
In the absence of Ald. Vi Daley (43rd), Chuck Eastwood congratulated the newly elected officers and board members, and spoke about what was going on in the 43rd Ward.
Mid-North Association presented its Lifetime Membership Award to Bobby Burleson, proprietor of Kelsey's and Kendall's on Lincoln Avenue, in appreciation of his support of the Association and the Lincoln Park Community.
Mid-North Association was incorporated in 1957 and is concerned with neighborhood preservation and beautification, building codes and zoning, safety, City services, traffic, parking, street noise, cleanliness, and other issues affecting the quality of life in the Mid-North area. Membership is open to local residents and businesses. Mid-North's service area is bounded by Lincoln Avenue, Lincoln Park, Fullerton Parkway, and the former Ogden Avenue right-of-way (just south of Armitage Avenue).
