The Chicago Symphony has announced the 2005 Youth Auditions. String players born between Jan. 1, 1988 and Dec. 31, 1991 will be auditioned on Thursday and Friday, Feb. 10 and 11, in the Buntrock Hall at Symphony Center. The finals will be heard in Orchestra Hall on Saturday, Feb. 26. The winner will be featured as a soloist with the full orchestra during its 2005-06 season.
One audition participant will be eligible to win a scholarship for a six week session at the Interlochen Arts Academy in northern Michigan. Two others will be awarded a two week scholarship at Interlochen. These awards will be granted under the auspices of the Lindy Roe Scholarship Fund of the Women's Association of the CSO.
The young musician competition was established by Dr. Frederick Stock in the orchestra's 1919-20 season. A number of earlier winners are now performing with the orchestra or in distinguished careers as solo performers. Information on the auditions can be obtained by calling Penelope Johnson at (312) 294-3164.
In another announcement, the CSO has invited interested members of the public to participate in a town meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 5:30 p.m. This forum will give the public an opportunity to interact with the CSO's search committee in its efforts to identify and engage a new music director to replace the departing Daniel Barenboim. A short presentation on the committee's progress will be followed by an open mike session permitting public input into the search process.
For those unable to attend, the CSO has established a website at cso.org/search to encourage comments from as broad a range of the public as possible.
