Book news: Local artists

The Fine Arts Building Gallery announces that the work of four of its members is being published in a new book on artists currently exhibiting in Illinois. These artist are Grace Cole, Kathleen King, Ronald Kulla, and Deborah Pieritz, all long-standing members of FAB Gallery. In addition to the gallery members, two artists who maintain studios in the Fine Arts Building are included: Christine J. Basick and Vanessa Smith. Thus a significant portion of the book's content will concern artists connected with one of Chicago’s oldest art-centered landmarks.
The book, "Living Artists," is published by Crow Woods Publishing (editor: Ivy Sundell), and is the third in a series of books examining the works of Chicago-area artists. The artists represented in the book, some 61 in all, were chosen for this honor by a jury of three experts in the field. These include: John Brunetti, Illinois editor of "dialogue" and Curator at Evanston Art Center; Dominic Molon, Associate Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago; and Marianne Richter, Curator at the Union League Club. The criteria were originality, composition, technical ability and emotional appeal. In addition to reproductions of the artists’ work, the book has a directory containing a brief biography of each artist, as well as their gallery representation, contact information and personal statements. Thus this book provides both a valuable view of a cross-section of fine artists in Chicago, and some broader insight into the creative process as articulated by those artists.
"Living Arts" is currently available at amazon.com, and should appear in area bookstores shortly. The soft cover edition is $28.50, and the hardcover is $42.50, with 10 percent of the sales benefiting the Northwestern University Settlement House.
The Fine Arts Building Gallery primarily showcases Chicago artists. In addition to the featured exhibit, works of member artists are also on display. All works are for sale. The gallery is located on the 4th floor, Suite 433, next to the Venetian Court of the Fine Arts Building, 410 S. Michigan Ave. The building is a National Historical Landmark and has been an artist’s colony for over a century. Call (312) 913-0537 Wednesday through Saturday noon-6 p.m.
