Lillstreet presents two exhibitions, Yi-Wen Kuo and Jae Won Lee with The Contemporary Cup, Feb. 12-March 13. There will be an artists' reception Saturday, Feb. 12, from 2 to 5 p.m.
The metaphor of the container as a body or skin, holding within it the private contents of one’s own imagination or soul, has often been invoked by the work of ceramists. Lillstreet has paired together two shows, Yi-Wen Kuo (and) Jae Won Lee and The Contemporary Cup: two exhibitions of contemporary reflections and responses to the container.
Artists Kuo and Lee are perfectly paired in a meditation on the quiet act of journaling and the embodiment of the mysterious and personal. Simple and austere slab-built forms are the secret receptacles for reflection, with Kuo enclosing his writings on the interior walls of his containers and Lee building reductivist forms that act as silent, evocative surrogates. The work is mysterious and beautiful, an elegant marriage of enigmatic minimalism with thoughtful, seductive forms.
Mug shows have become the classic group exhibition of contemporary ceramists. Accessible both in form and in price, these shows exemplify the artists’ creativity and skill. A wonderful opportunity to see and collect from a survey of who’s who in the American ceramic scene, The Contemporary Cup promises the range.
Curated by Ralph Scala, the show involves 56 renowned ceramists: Gina Bobrowski, Christie Federighi, Randy Jonston, Kristen Kieffer, Lisa Orr, Liz Quakenbush, Virginia Scotchie, Michaelene Walsh, Janis Mars Underlich, and more.
