Mayor Daley’s Dumpster Task Force has closed Oriental Express, 1023 W. Wilson Ave., because of rodent (rat) infestation.
Task Force inspectors, responding to citizen complaints about rodent activity, found more than 100 rat droppings throughout the premises—in the kitchen, on cooking surfaces and in storage areas. Inspectors also found several holes and openings which could have provided rats with ample nesting sites.
The Oriental Express was issued a critical violation for inadequate pest control and a serious violation for a grease container not maintained. They will not be allowed to reopen until they clean up the restaurant, present the Task Force with revised plans for pest control and housekeeping, repair all holes and openings and then pass the final reinspection.
Mayor Daley created the Task Force in 1994 to supplement Chicago’s sanitation code by eliminating overflowing garbage that can attract rodents. Food-selling firms can be closed if interior sanitation problems are severe enough to risk the sale of contaminated food to the public. |
