Jerome Robbins' 'New York Export: Opus Jazz'

The Joffrey Ballet performs its Winter Program, American Masterworks, March 9-20, featuring a mixed rep program with works by Balanchine, Antony Tudor, and Jerome Robbins. On the program will be Balanchine's "Square Dance" (1957), whimsically melding together classical movement and the uniquely American folk dance complete with a traditional caller on stage, with a score by Arcangelo Corelli and Antonio Vivaldi. Tudor's "Dark Elegies" (1937), touching on themes of grief and loss, combines formal classical ballet with a more modern style (in part inspired by the work of Kurt Jooss) and hints of oriental dance, all set to music by Gustaf Mahler. Robbins' "New York Export: Opus Jazz" (1958) is a chic, hip tribute to the 1950s beat poet generation featuring a score by Robert Prince and sets by celebrated artist Ben Shahn. Single tickets begin at $15 and are available at the Auditorium Theatre box office, 50 E. Congress Pkwy.; at all Ticketmaster Ticket Centers; by phone at (312) 902-1500; or on-line at ticketmaster.com.
