Possible links among murders
The murder of openly gay teacher Charles Gibson on Oct. 31 in the 1000 block of W. Balmoral Ave. may be linked to two other unsolved murders in the area. Brad Winters and Kevin Clewer, both gay, were brutally stabbed in the last 14 months as well. Each of the three is believed to have met the attacker, perhaps a male prostitute, at a bar on Halsted St. shortly before he was killed.
Police are looking for a suspect named "Fernando," who is white or Hispanic, 5'7", 25, with an athletic build and dark wavy hair. He speaks with a Hispanic or European-Spanish accent.
Gibson joined Chicago Public Schools in 1987 and taught first at Mather High School. He has taught at Gage Park High School as a special education teacher since 1991.
Clewer, 31, was stabbed to death March 24, 2004. Winters, 38, was stabbed and beaten to death Aug. 17, 2003.
Serial rapist sentenced
Mark Anthony Lewis, 37, was sentenced by Cook County Circuit Judge James Linn on Monday to a second 120-year term for the sexual assault of a pregnant 38-year-old Vietnamese immigrant in Niles in May 2000. He already had received a 120-year sentence for attacking a 15-year-old girl on the North Side. The two terms are to be served consecutively. Lewis was charged with assaulting a total of nine girls or women; he has been convicted of aggravated criminal sexual assault, home invasion and robbery. Prosecutors do not plan to take the other seven cases to trial since Lewis already has a lifetime sentence. |
