Winter is just around the corner. It's time to plan projects to keep you busy during the cold months ahead. The Winter '05 program at Lillstreet Art Center, 4401 N. Ravenswood Ave., looks wonderful—here's a handful of this session's new classes. Swing by the reception desk for a copy of the complete list of exciting new classes. December workshops begin Nov. 29, and a new session starts Jan. 10.
Since many students enjoyed Judy Leemann's writing workshop in the fall, Lillstreet will offer three special creative development classes taught by this talented writer, artist and performer. For a creative workout, check out her (5 week) Writing for Artists and (5 week) Think Like an Artist. Judy's generative exercises will have your artistic muscles flexing in no time. Using collaborative and writing activities, Judy promises to "challenge habitual thinking" by teaching you new creative tools that can be applied to how you approach your own practice.
If you need just a creative jump-start, her One Day Workout will be offered twice in the Winter Session. One Day Workout: Saturday, Feb. 19, or Saturday, March 12, 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; Think Like An Artist: Thursday, Feb. 17-March 17, 6:30-9:30 p.m.; Writing for Artists: Tuesday 6:30-9:30 p.m. or Sunday 5-8 p.m., Feb. 15-March 15.
The Ceramic Art department has a number of new classes that promise to expand your repertoire of skills. Check out Margaret Park-Smith's Screenprinting on Clay, Wednesdays 7-10 p.m.; Arie Grie's Neri Komi, Sundays 1-4 p.m.; and the much anticipated Maiolica class taught by artist and gallerist Dubhe Carreno on Monday afternoons.
Chris Plummer's Interactive Study is new to the multilevel offerings. The class is an opportunity for inquisitive students to learn some of the professional skills not taught in Lillstreet's other clay classes, while expanding their knowledge of the ceramic arts through field-trips to galleries, museums and studios. Look for this class on Thursday nights 7-10 p.m..
Lillstreet's first cross-disciplinary class will be offered through the Jewelry and Metals department. Sarah Chapman and Emily Murphy have teamed up to create a 5-week Lampshades workshop where students will construct the base from clay and the shade from metal (Tuesdays, 7-10 p.m.).
There are also several new workshops in Chain Maille with Rebeca Mojica. Check out her beautiful work in silver, gold and aluminum currently on view in the gallery. You'll be inspired!
Painting and Drawing is offering a four-week 1st Time Painter class in December (Wednesday 6:30-9:30 p.m.). If you haven't taken brush to canvas before, this is your chance to experiment. The Textiles (formally Fiber) department is also offering an array of December classes. For those of you who have yet to venture to the third floor studios, try one of the workshops in felting (Instant Mitts, Saturday, Dec. 4, and Felted Feet, Sunday, Dec. 5) for a satisfying creative experience and a chance to make some great gifts!
There are plenty more classes and workshops to choose from in the bulletin! If you'd like more information on these featured classes, call (773) 769-4226.
IN THE GALLERY: Many people have already had a chance to see (and collect) the work of ceramists Michael Corney and Michael Wisner. Their work is thrilling.
Amy Lemaire's beautiful clay and glass bead jewelry has already caught the eye of SOFA visitors. Lillstreet considers Amy a rising star! If you haven't had a chance to meet or to work with her, you can catch her in the jewelry studios Wednesday evenings and Sundays 11 a.m.-2 p.m. teaching her popular Glass Bead Making class.
In January, Lillstreet will host the First Annual Student Members' sale.
