'I Hate Nature'
Martha Schwartz, professor at the Harvard Design School and owner of a prominent landscape design firm, has been referred to as the "wild child" of landscape architecture. Schwartz will lecture on the social and cultural expectations we have for and with nature as we design our own environments, which are frequently antithetical to nature.
Martha Schwartz, Inc. produces work ranging from a series of metaphorical "molecule" experiences for the proposed NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, to installations such as 51 Garden Ornaments, a sly commentary on the consumer culture created by our gardening "natural" urges.
The lecture takes place Thursday, Dec. 2, at 6 p.m. in the Museum of Contemporary Art Theatre, 220 E. Chicago Ave. For tickets, please contact Amy Mooney at amooney@colum.edu or call the MCA at (312) 397-4010. Tickets are free but required to reserve a seat for this event.

Schoenberg’s 'Flash-Point'
Arnold Schoenberg’s early music was rather conventional and romantic, but in 1908 he produced the first revolutionary work of atonal music. How did Vienna in 1908 provide the perfect social and cultural environment to move Schoenberg to what Jeff Abell calls "the flash point" of transformation? And what part might have been played by the challenges of his intimate relationships?
On Wednesday, Dec. 1, Elizabeth Kehrer and Jeff Abell will explore these issues in their joint presentation, The Epicenter of Change, Vienna in the Early Twentieth Century. With slides and audio recordings, they will invoke the spirit of that historic moment and Schoenberg’s quantum leap. The program—part of the Intersections lecture and discussion series jointly sponsored by the Cultural Studies Program at Columbia College and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs—will take place at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, in the First Floor West Meeting Room of the Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington St. Admission is free. For more information, call (312) 744-6630 or visit intersections.colum.edu.

Grand Ave. The observance includes a "Two Bell " ceremony and a wreath will be tossed into Lake Michigan. The ceremony commemorates the lives of servicemen who were killed in the attack and it celebrates the achievements of local survivors who went on to serve our country honorably in the War and beyond. It also honors the service members of today who uphold the traditions of resolve and service established at Pearl Harbor.
