Physical pain and recovery inspire exhibition

A national touring exhibition featuring work by artists whose lives have been touched by an orthopaedic condition—and the physicians who treat them—will be presented at the Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington St., from Sept. 22 through Nov. 25. “eMotion Pictures: An Exhibition of Orthopaedics in Art” is a juried exhibition organized by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. The exhibition includes 81 artists from 10 countries and 23 states, including seven Chicago-area artists. Admission is free.

Artwork by patients reflects the artists’ orthopaedic pain, frustration, recovery and hope. Works by orthopaedic surgeons illustrate the patient/physician partnership, compassion, the art of healing, and how they feel they make a difference in people’s lives. Media used include painting, drawing, prints, photography, sculpture, textiles, crafts, functional art and mixed media. A personal narrative describing artists’ impressions for their work accompanies each piece.

For more information, call (312) 744-6630 or visit www.cityofchicago.org/Tour/CulturalCenter/. Exhibition viewing hours are Monday through Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closed holidays).
