Stroke is the third leading killer in the world. However, most Americans cannot name a single warning sign indicating a stroke is about to occur. Life Line Screening is dedicated to the prevention and education of stroke, also known as a "Brain Attack." As part of a program designed to reduce the risk of stroke, residents living in and around Chicago can be screened to reduce their risk of having a stroke.
On Nov. 4, Queen of Angels Parish of Chicago opened their doors to the community and screened 78 people in one day. On that day many learned life saving information from the screenings , as the tests revealed two people severe for Carotid Arterial Disease, two abnormal for Peripheral Arterial Disease, one abnormal and two critical for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm, and 18 high risk for Osteoporosis Disease. The next local opportunity for Life Line Screening will be at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, 3817 N. Christiana Ave., on Thursday, March 31.
Life Line Screening was established in 1993, and has since become the nation’s leading provider of vascular screenings. These non-invasive, inexpensive and painless ultrasound tests help people identify their risk for stroke, vascular diseases or osteoporosis early enough for their physician to begin preventive procedures.
Many people debate the issue of attending health screenings based on the argument, "Why can’t I just get these tests done by my physician?" The answer, although relatively surprising, is that your physician will not order these tests without clear evidence of symptoms. Your doctor's hands are tied due to Medicare and insurance not covering these tests that would typically run from $300-$800 each.
Ironically, most people who suffer from a stroke or aortic abdominal aneurysm never show any signs or symptoms that a major medical catastrophe is about to occur.
Screenings involve the use of ultrasound technology, and scan for potential health problems related to: blocked arteries which can lead to a stroke, aortic aneurysms which can lead to a ruptured aorta, and hardening of the arteries in the legs, a strong predictor of heart disease. Additionally offered for men and women is a bone density screening to assess their risk for osteoporosis.
Each screening requires 10 minutes or less and each costs $45. Sign-up for a vascular package and pay only $109. Screenings are for individuals age 40 and above.
