THEATRE 5.2.1, a new Chicago non-profit-pending theatre company, is set to produce their inaugural play, a new musical called "The Sleeper," for only 10 performances. Once the run is finished, the script will be burned and the play will never be seen again.
"The Sleeper" is a timely, fable-istic tale of a crooked landlord who moves into his own building after unnecessarily evicting one of his oldest tenants. He finds the apartment is infested with mice and a war ensues. "The Sleeper" features: Joe Stearns, Elizabeth Bagby, David Morrison, John Leen, Jennifer Cox, and Whitney Stone; and is directed by Lewis Lain with music by Dan Schiller and choreography by Valerie Moore. "The Sleeper" will open its limited run at Theatre Building Chicago at 1225 W. Belmont Ave. on Friday, March 18, and will play Friday and Saturday nights at 10:30 p.m. through April 16. Admission is $5. The box office number is (773) 327-5252.
THEATRE 5.2.1 is a group of theatre artists trying to bring the real experience of live theatre back to its audience. They create new work, inspired by today’s trials and tribulations, stage this work for a total of 10 performances, and then burn the script. They feel this insures that their work remains fresh, hard-hitting, and honest; providing a uniquely entertaining, once-in-life-time performance for the people who deserve it—and all at a cost of only $5.
According to the group, "We don’t believe in regurgitating old work for the sake of our artistic selfishness or the gratification of a self-centered industry— that is cheating this art form and more importantly the audience that views it. The theatre of 5.2.1 is like a match struck in a dark room—illuminating, exposing, then burning out. Never to be struck again."
