The Japan Hall of Fame on exhibit at International Museum of Surgical Science

A new exhibit, “The Japan Hall of Fame,” opened at the International Museum of Surgical Science on March 19. This exhibit seeks to provide the viewer with a greater understanding of the contributions Japanese surgeons have made to modern surgical science. The exhibit is located in a striking gallery within the Museum’s historical landmark mansion.
Japanese surgeons have exported many great medical advances around the world, pioneering such surgical frontiers as ultrasound, anesthetics and surgical stapling. On display will be a Japanese Surgery Hall of Fame honoring some of the greatest Japanese surgeons including Komei Nakayama. Also featured is the work of Seishu Hanaoka, an 18th century surgeon who perfected anesthesia to the benefit of some 153 breast cancer patients. Special attention will be given to histories of ligature and autosuture and the role Japanese physicians played in their development.
The Museum is located at 1524 N. Lake Shore Drive, one-half block south of North Avenue. The hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission rates are $6 for adults and $3 for students and seniors. Tuesdays are free. For more information, call (312) 642-6502 or visit imss.org.
