St. Greg's adds Bernie Socha, Manning Scholarship Committee to Wall of Fame
The community and parishioners are welcome to join St. Gregory's High School in celebrating the extraordinary 40-year career of Coach Bernie Socha and in recognizing the Manning family's deep roots and service to school community. The event takes place Saturday, April 9. The church ceremony starts at 6 p.m. Cocktails, dinner and music follow immediately in Monsignor Klasen Gymnasium. For tickets ($50), call (773) 907-2114.
For four decades, 1950-1990, the name Bernie Socha was synonymous with St. Gregory High School. As a school, St. Gregory was blessed with his leadership, kindness and lifetime of commitment. For the Wall of Fame, his athletes, now fully matured, will return to their alma mater to pay tribute to the enduring impact this one special man had on their formation as adults. They need only look to the lessons, plays and strategies that have served them well to realize the good fortune they had to be a Greyhound. Winning or losing, staying in the game and doing one's best was always foremost. The Honorable Michael J. Pope, Class of '61, and former coach Jim Bracewell, Class of '60, return to their alma mater as award presenters.
The Manning family, too, has deep roots in the St. Gregory community. Marty Manning, Class of '70, one of 16 Manning offspring, stood on the threshold of life: young, eager and proud to be following in his father's footsteps. With a diploma from St. Gregory and a degree from Kent School of Law, Marty passed the state bar and was ready to take on the world when tragedy struck and ended his career just as it was beginning. Grieving family and friends gathered and decided to transform pain into possibility. For 25 years this closely bonded committee of friends and family staged an annual event that successfully funded, for so many years, the Marty Manning Scholarship in honor of the memory of their dear friend and brother.
James McKay, Class of '76, is Chief of the Narcotics Prosecution Bureau of the State Attorney's Office. Jim was the first St. Gregory student to receive the Marty Manning Scholarship. James McKay will be the main presenter at the Wall of Fame ceremony to recognize the members of the Manning Committee: Dan and Joan (Cowie) Manning, Maggi Manning, Kevin Donahue, Mary Ann, Greg and Tim Teister, Tom Nossem and John Cowie.
