Stolen: Keys to many banks

An ATM repairman who covers the territory from North Avenue to Wisconsin and from the Lakefront to St. Charles was a victim of a theft on March 6-7. He had parked his 2004 Pontiac van in the 1200 block of W. Gunnison St. overnight. He returned to find the passenger door window broken. Taken from the vehicle was the victim’s toolbox — and over 100 sets of keys to bank doors, ATM machines, and bank alarms. Fortunately, whoever has the keys will not be able to use them without the codes corresponding to the keys.



18th and 23rd Districts

Peeping Tom
An incident of voyeurism took place at 9:45 a.m. Saturday, March 5, at Gill Park, 825 W. Sheridan Rd. A woman taking a shower observed a Hispanic man in his 30s watching her from two feet away. The attendant asked him to leave, and he did — but he returned 10 minutes later. Confronted a second time, he fled. The subject, 5'5", 130 lb., previously has been seen three times in the women's locker room.

Attempted armed robbery
At 4:30 a.m. Saturday, March 5, two male offenders came up behind a man walking in the 3700 block of N. Wilton Ave. They hit him in the lower back with a blunt object and said, "Get on the ground and give us all your money." The victim turned and told them not to mess with him. The victim was holding a beer bottle, and he threw it at the offenders and ran from them. One offender was black, 6'2"; the other was white, 5'10".

Armed robbery
At 8:25 p.m. Monday, March 14, a doctor was standing in the 3400 block of N. Broadway. Two unknown male offenders approached. The first said, "This is a hold-up. Give me everything you have." The second searched the victim's pockets, taking a wallet, cell phone and keys. The offenders, brandishing a semi-automatic gun, ordered the victim to remain at a certain spot for some minutes or they'd kill him.
In the wallet were $20, credit cards, driver's license, and gift cards. After the crime, $180 was charged on the victim's credit card at Diversey Liquors.
The offenders were both black, 25-30. One was 5'11", 170 lb.; the other was 5'7", 150 lb.

Whispering robber
The Nine West shoe store, 2739 N. Clark St., was robbed on Thursday, March 17, at 8:43 p.m. The male offender appeared at the counter. He whispered, "I'm going to give you nine seconds to give me all the money, underneath too. I don't want to have to hurt you or anybody else." He then started counting down from nine. The offender had his right hand in his coat pocket the entire time. Fearing that he had a gun in his right hand, the store employee gave him the money as quickly as possible. He took the money — $521 — with his left hand. The offender was described as black, 27-35, 5'5" to 5'8", 160-185 lb., with a very dark complexion.

Early morning robbery
While walking home from Hydrate bar at Halsted and Cornelia, at 3:04 a.m. Wednesday, March 16, a man was robbed by two offenders. He saw the first man exit a silver vehicle and point a blue steel revolver at him. "Give all your money to him," he said, indicating the second offender. They took a wallet containing $73 and a State ID. The offenders were white males in their 20s.

Similar crimes
An attorney walking down the 900 block of Newport Ave. was approached at 9:05 p.m. Tuesday, March 15. The two offenders detained him. The first said, "Give me all you #*!@# money or I will shoot you with this gun in my pocket." The victim observed a bulge in the offender's pants pocket, and believed he had a gun. The victim said, "Go ahead...shoot me." The two fled, entering a light Ford Focus with an Illinois plate beginning 588. Both robbers were black men; one wore glasses.
A short while later, at 10:20 p.m., a man was walking down the 3700 block of N. Pine Grove Ave. carrying a grocery bag. Two offenders approached him. The first said, "Give me your money," and then pulled open his hoody to display a black semi-automatic handgun. The victim said he had no money and backed away from the offenders. The second said, "Don't go away!" At this point the victim hit the offenders with his grocery bag and ran. He saw the two offenders jump into a beige two-door Ford, driven by a black male, that was waiting at Waveland and Pine Grove avenues. The two robbers were black men; one wore glasses. The license plate included the numbers 588.

Aggravated vehicular hijacking
As a man drove his red '97 Jeep eastbound on W. Wilson Ave., he paused at 4:15 a.m. Tuesday, March 15, in the 1000 block of W. Wilson Ave. Two men stood nearby; one asked for a light for a cigarette, and the driver pulled over. The offender then grabbed the driver by his shirt and said, "Give me your money." "I have no money," the victim responded. The offender then placed his hand in his jacket pocket, implying he had a gun. The victim exited the vehicle, and the offenders forcibly took the victim's wallet, containing $20, and his keys. They boarded the Jeep and fled.
At 10:15 p.m. that same day, police saw this Jeep commit a moving violation and pulled it over in the 1600 block of W. 61st St. The two occupants fled on foot but were pursued by police and caught. Todd Brown and Xavier Woulard were arrested and the vehicle was returned to its owner.

Electronics & cash
A laptop ($2,000) and $150 were stolen from a residence in the 500 block of N. Cornelia; the burglary was discovered at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, March 20. Pry marks were noticed on the door.

Jewelry
A residence in the 400 block of W. Barry was unoccupied between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 18. The resident returned to find the apartment door pried open and several pieces of jewelry missing.

Unlawful entry
A burglar apparently used an unlocked rear kitchen window to enter an apartment in the 3800 block of N. Fremont St. sometime Friday, March 18. A resident returned to find a chain lock on the front door — hooked by the burglars to avoid interruption. The resident then found the rear door closed but unlocked; this apparently was the burglar's exit path. The burglar took $30 in change, a DVD player and 40 DVDs. Also gone were many items of jewelry, made of gold, silver, pearl and diamond.

Unlawful entry
Sometime Thursday, March 17, a burglar entered an apartment in the 4100 block of N. Marine Dr. He opened a closet door, found a jewelry cabinet, and took from it a drawer that contained two gold rings — one with a diamond — and numerous pairs of earrings.

Tickets taken
A resident of the 4400 block of N. Racine Ave. returned from work Monday, March 14, and notice the rear window pried open. Missing were one computer keyboard, 23 Gospel CDs, 150 Ringling Bros. tickets ($10 each), 150 Great America Tickets ($24 each), and 100 Loew's Cinema tickets ($17 each).

Burglary loss $35,000
Someone forced open the door of a condo in the 700 block of W. Buckingham Wednesday, March 2. The alarm was not set because the phone was not working at the time. The burglar took a solid silver one-of-a-kind George Jensen necklace that weighed about a half-pound ($10,000); two silver/ turquoise bracelets ($1,000 each); gold earrings with diamond chips ($7,000); a gold necklace ($3,000); a gold watch ($3,000); a gold bracelet ($2,000); a silver/ coral bracelet ($1,000); a pearl necklace; a Tiffany diamond engagement ring ($3,000); a gold wedding band with ruby/ diamond inlay; a solid gold wedding band; other jewelry; a Minolta SLR camera; a Vivitar zoom lens; a Sony digital camera ($2,500); a black Armani suit jacket ($1,000); one white and one blue dress shirt ($80); a Samsonite suit bag; and a drawer full of miscellaneous receipts, bills, credit cards, etc. The total loss was about $35,000.

Deceptive practice
A CTA agent observed a 22-year-old man jumping the turnstile at the Broadway CTA station, thus depriving the CTA of a fare, at 11:31 p.m. Friday, March 18. The subject was detained for the police, who transported him to the 23rd District.

19th and 20th Districts

Next time, lock it
An employee for Dialcom Company works a route removing coins from pay phones. He parked his car in the 500 block of N. Sheridan Rd. at 12:42 p.m. Wednesday, March 8, and entered a store to remove coins from the pay phone at that location. When he returned to the car a few minutes later, he discovered property missing from the back seat: two brown cloth bags containing $800-$1000 in coins. He had not locked the car doors because he was only leaving the car briefly.

Two apartments hit
Between 9:30 a.m. and 12:20 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, someone burglarized an apartment in the 900 block of W. Winona St. The resident returned to find the top lock not locked, and the bottom lock — which locks automatically — locked. The door had been pried open. The offender had ransacked the dresser drawers, stealing three $100 bills, three watches, two black leather coats, a CD/Tape player with two speakers, and a small TV.
In addition, the adjoining apartment was also burglarized that day, sometime between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. The front door was pried open. Taken were a gold ring, a silver ring, three watches, and a CD player.

Pickpocket
A 75-year-old man stood in the bank parking lot at 5600 N. Lincoln Ave. at 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, ready to go in to deposit $300 in cash that he had in his front left coat pocket. He was approached by a black male, 40, who told him to check his car tires because something was wrong with them. The victim looked and said it was okay; the offender said to check again, and the victim said he’d go to a garage. During this time the offender stood near the victim. The victim then went into the bank and discovered his money was missing.

Towing trouble
According to police reports, a service technician parked his Chevy van in the 4500 block of N. Broadway and it was towed to a tow lot three blocks further north on March 8. When the technician went to retrieve his vehicle, he said the following items were missing: a Hiliti tool box ($750) and a pipe threader ($1300).

Electronics & jewelry
A laptop and a gold necklace were taken in a burglary in the 1500 block of W. Edgewater Ave. on Wednesday, March 2. The place was ransacked.

Garage break-in
With a screwdriver, unknown offenders forced open a garage door in the 800 block of W. Castlewood Terrace on Saturday, March 5, and gained entry to the residence. Taken was a wallet containing credit cards, a driver’s license and an unknown amount of cash.

Bike swiped
In the 5200 block of N. Wayne Ave., a resident discovered her bicycle ($600) stolen from the rear porch sometime March 4-5. In addition, the door of this enclosed porch had been damaged by prying, and its windowpane had been broken.

CD player vanishes
Someone broke a window of a ’92 Buick parked in the 4800 black of N. Winchester Ave. March 2-5. After gaining access to the car, the offender stole the vehicle's CD player.

Crime of opportunity
In the Shell Station, 5700 N. Broadway, a woman left the car trunk open while she talked to the attendant at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 5. She then discovered her wallet stolen. It contained credit cards, a checkbook, and $60.

Stereo gone
An offender broke into a ’99 Nissan parked in the 1400 block of W. Gregory St. March 4-5. Stolen was a car stereo ($130).
Construction site
A painter arrived at a building under construction in the 2200 block of W. Lawrence Ave. on Sunday, March 6, after an absence of a week. He discovered numerous tools missing: one A/C compressor, one miter saw, two nail guns, two screw guns and a circular saw.

Purse gone
While working as a waitress in a restaurant in the 1700 block of W. Lawrence Ave. Saturday, March 5, a woman placed her purse under the counter. When she went to retrieve it after work, it was gone. Taken were $100, a credit card, IDs, and keys.

Theft at Mather
A student at Mather High School returned to her locker Tuesday, March 8, to discover her book bag ($180) and her calculator ($130) missing. The locker was locked at the time of discovery. The responding officers had the school exchange locks.
