Whether you're a parent looking for a rewarding camp experience for the kids, a thirty-something in need of a great aerobic workout or an older adult whose long-time dream is to create a stained glass masterpiece, the Chicago Park District has thousands of classes to fit the bill.
This year the Chicago Park District gets a jump on summer with an early start for online registration beginning March 28 at 9 a.m. at chicagoparkdistrict.com. To accommodate this popular online register feature, the park district added more on-line slots; park staff has held remaining slots for applicants who prefer to walk in to the park apply.
On-line registrations are payable only via Visa or MasterCard, with an email confirmation of program reservation and payment. People without access to the Internet can visit their local Chicago Public Library, which will have Internet ready computers and assistance available for people wishing to register for park programs on-line. To register on-line, visit the Web site at chicagoparkdistrict.com and view the programs available for summer.
On-site registration at citywide parks begins on Saturday, April 2, at 9 a.m. and runs through the first day of summer programming. Along with the recreational, sport and cultural activities this summer, campers can once again take part in Camp Chicago. Several parks will be accepting credit cards for more convenient payment.
Determine the camps you prefer by reviewing the Summer Program Schedule or the Web site now, in advance of March 28. Visit or call your local park's supervisor to discuss the camp and assess that park's environment on the in-person registration day. Some communities have a tradition of camping out at the park the night before registration begins to try to get a spot because there are not enough spots to meet the demand. Some camps fill within a few hours; other parks will not fill registration for several weeks. Therefore, early registration is suggested.
Fees vary depending on the program, but they are always affordable. Summer program classes begin on June 13 and end on Aug. 21. The popular 6-week summer day camp begins June 27 and runs through Aug. 5. Parents should consult with the staff at the neighborhood park for exact dates and times. |
