Six new treatment programs providing help for substance and drug abuse, smoking cessation and HIV prevention, have opened at the Northside office of Haymarket Center, 4753 N. Broadway (formerly the Uptown Bank Building), Suite 612.
Highlighting the programs is a three-night-per-week series focusing on crystal methamphetamine. "Crystal Meth Anonymous" provides support for users, particularly users who identify as part of or with the gay community, through education and uninhibited discussion. A focus of these groups is defining crystal meth as a powerful amphetamine now spreading through the community, often at parties where drug sales are paid for with sexual contact.
Crystal meth impacts human brains differently than other drugs so that most individuals are not able to sustain casual use. Depression and other mood problems result, as well as HIV risk factors, higher than currently present in the gay community.
Other segments of the program include a series on "Adolescent Outpatient Substance Abuse Treatment"; "Comprehensive HIV Prevention Programs" (this includes free testing); "Alcoholics Anonymous for Persons Living with/at the Risk of HIV/AIDS"; "Smoking Cessation‚" (quarterly classes); and "LGBT Support Group."
