Mayor Daley's Dumpster Task Force has closed a combination Baskin Robbins, Dunkin Donuts & Togo's Eatery at 801 W. Diversey Pkwy., because of heavy flying insect infestation and poor housekeeping.
Complaints of rodents and uncontained garbage initially brought inspectors out to this 24-hour fast food haven, but instead of rats or mice they found unacceptable levels of flying insects and sanitation.
More than 100 flying insects were found buzzing around the dining room, the hot food line, the cold food prep area and in storage. They were spotted on the walls, windows, dirty dishes and even around an oven. Additionally inspectors found that the kitchen sink and door knobs were encrusted with grease and that management did not follow their Pest Control Company's advice to clean the main sink's drain area.
The Baskin Robbins, Dunkin Donuts & Togo's combination eatery was issued citations for inadequate pest control, for failure to prevent cross contamination and for the failure of workers to wash their hands. It will stay closed until management presents the Task Force with revised plans for pest control and housekeeping, cleans up, repairs all holes and then requests and passes a final reinspection.
"It's good that restaurants offer many choices to their customers, but eating at a restaurant with insect infestation should not be one of them," said Streets & Sanitation Commissioner Al Sanchez. "On-site management will have to do a lot of explaining to the people who run these well known chains."
Mayor Daley created the Dumpster Task Force in 1994 to assist the City with sanitation code enforcement. Food handling firms can be promptly shut down if they have problems keeping their establishments safe and clean. |
